Director-general of the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) Themba Maseko has requested early release from his contract.

The DPSA says his contract was due to expire at the end of June 2012. However, Maseko had been in discussions with minister Richard Baloyi over the past few weeks following his request for early release.

Baloyi granted his request and announced his regret at Maseko's departure last week.

According to department spokesperson Dumisani Nkwamba, Maseko felt it was time to retire and spend quality time with his family.

Maseko had been in government for 16 years. His career in the public service includes a stint as a Member of Parliament in 1994, head of education (superintendent-general) in the Gauteng government, director-general of public works and CEO of the Government Communication and Information System prior to his transfer to the post of DG at the DPSA.

Maseko's last day of service was on Friday.

"I believe I have served the South African public for the past 16 years to the best of my ability. I take the opportunity to thank the South African government for having given me the opportunity to serve,” said Maseko in his letter to the minister.

Nkwamba says the department is still finalising the process for appointing a new DG, but, in the meantime, there is no vacuum because the minister has appointed deputy DG Kenny Govender as acting DG of the DPSA.
