Driver's licence scanning unlocks identity fraud

Industries as diverse as the financial services sector and equipment rental companies share a common threat, that of identity theft. One of the biggest risks to any organisation is the inherent threat of providing your goods or services to a potential customer, only to find out that you have been swindled.

Bartrans is proud to announce that it is in a position to offer South African companies not only piece of mind, but also an added layer of security to any over-the-counter transaction in which the threat of identity fraud is so prevalent. By incorporating the decryption algorithm for the South African national driver's licences directly into our latest barcode scanner, Bartrans is able to provide you with all of the information embedded in the card.

Many companies have in the past expressed an interest in using this type of technology. The ability to scan a driver's licence and decode the encrypted information contained within the barcode has always been of interest, but until recently has proved difficult to implement and cost prohibitive. One of the biggest hurdles faced by potential users of this technology was the fact that software developers had to spend time altering their source code to cater for the data and decryption algorithms. By embedding that code directly into the scanner, Bartrans has now alleviated that burden and ensured that faster implementation times can be achieved with far fewer costly resources.

Once loaded with the algorithm the scanner itself can easily be setup via a USB port to send through only the required fields. A series of barcoded instructions may be scanned from the user's manual and information such as the photograph, identity number, expiry date, PDP licence number etc. may all be displayed. What makes this system ideal is that it can also be programmed to cater for tabbed data and can thus be used to automatically populate the data on your forms. Picture a scenario whereby a customer enters your store and wishes to open an account or possibly rent an item from you. If your attendant at the point of sale had the ability to scan a driver's license and pre-populate most of the required information, that would lead to a quicker transaction time and an improved experience for your customer. In such case a driver's licence could thus even be used as a loyalty card for future transactions.

Bartrans' compact area-imaging scanner offers aggressive scanning of all 1D, PDF and 2D bar codes in a lightweight, durable and portable form factor. The scanner's sleek and elegant design also blends seamlessly into retail environments.

Powered by Adaptus Imaging Technology 6.0, the scanner delivers superior bar code scanning and digital image capture. Aggressive reading of bar codes on highly reflective surfaces, such as mobile phone screens, eliminates the need to purchase additional specialty hardware.

The scanner also offers universal mounting and robust presentation mode scan performance, making the device an ideal fixed-mount scanning solution for use in light industrial applications and in kiosks.
