DRS penetration testing, vulnerability assessment services

Johannesburg, 03 Aug 2011

DRS penetration testing and VA services, now in their sixth year as a service offering, provides DRS clientele with critical information regarding the actual security risks facing their public infrastructure, such as corporate Web sites and online customer portals.

To provide this service, DRS utilises certified and skilled ethical hackers, best-of-breed penetration testing software, and an arsenal of manual techniques to ensure the delivered report contains an accurate reflection of the discovered vulnerabilities, as well as useful remediation advice to instantly assist our customers in prioritising and mitigating the discovered risks.

DRS offers two similar yet uniquely different services: these are a vulnerability assessment, and secondly, a penetration test (also known as a Pen Test).

By definition, a VA is the process of identifying and quantifying the vulnerabilities in an environment; this environment can be the internal network, servers or even the perimeter of your organisation. The outcome of such an assessment will indicate discovered weaknesses as well as provide remediation advice to help reduce the risk within your environment to an acceptable level.

A penetration test, although quite similar, is a method of simulating the actions of an external or internal attacker with the goal of identifying the presence of vulnerabilities and exploiting them with the intention of breaching the organisation's security.

In short, the difference between the two exercises is the fact that during a penetration test, discovered vulnerabilities are actively exploited by the tester.

Why do you need a VA/Pen Test?

Easy, penetration testing helps safeguard your organisation against financial loss through fraudulent activity of hackers or disgruntled employees, and even from unreliable business systems.

It proves due diligence and compliance to your industry regulators, and lastly, it protects your brand, by avoiding loss of customer confidence and erosion of your business reputation.
