
After a year in development, Drupal version 6.0, open source online publishing and content management system, is now available for download.
Drupal 6.0 release notes indicate usability improvements, security and maintainability advancements, friendlier installer, and expanded development framework as the basis for improvements on its predecessor.
According to the release notes, the developers have created a new administration solution, allowing users to drag and drop content, menus, profile fields and several other administration tools. One of the new features in the upgrade is the support of development in several languages.
For those familiar with the publishing platform, several modules have been added, including OpenID, allowing easier and more efficient control over user access. New action triggers allow content to be auctioned. For example, new content can be sent via e-mail to readers, newsletter style.
Security updates have been built into the new release and look at aspects such as granular permissions and role-based permissions. User privileges are now easier to manage and the PHP format has also been secured.
The Drupal developers and community are offering support in terms of translating version 5.x modules into version 6.0. Installation and upgrade instructions can be found on the Web site, and a full video roundup of features and frequently asked questions are available for download.
