Telecoms minister has placed director general Rosey Sekese on precautionary suspension for a period of 60 days.

The Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services' (DTPS) director general, Rosey Sekese has been placed on precautionary suspension for a period of 60 days.

This is according to a statement from the DTPS, which notes minister Siyabonga Cwele has decided to suspend Sekese while the Public Service Commission conducts its investigation.

Sekese's suspension comes after she submitted written representations of reasons why the minister should not place her on precautionary suspension.

"After considering the reasons and applying his mind, minister Cwele has decided to place the DG on precautionary suspension for a period of 60 days while the Public Service Commission conducts its independent inquiry," the statement reads.

It adds, "The decision is merely a precautionary step and is not a punishment and the director general will be on full pay during this period."

The minister has appointed Tinyiko Ngobeni as the acting director general until further notice.

Earlier this year, Cwele noted the department's ongoing leadership challenges and how they were negatively impacting on their ability to execute its functions timeously.

Following the minister's request the Public Service Commission is currently conducting an independent investigation in the dysfunction of the department.
