Dual PPPoE over one ADSL line

Johannesburg, 29 May 2012

Network Platforms, the sub-Saharan distributor for DrayTek, today announced that one of its resellers, Platformity, has identified and proved a solution to achieving dual PPPoE over one ADSL line.

PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) is a network protocol sometimes used by broadband modems for a DSL Internet service.

“This is a functionality that has been on our wish list for some time,” commented Bradley Love, Managing Director of Network Platforms. “It is currently supported in countries where local loop unbundling has taken place, and in these cases, the local ISPs have their own DSLAMs in the exchanges and are configured with different settings. To achieve this in South Africa, DrayTek needs to develop new firmware to enable them to connect to the same DSLAM using the same settings.

“The advantage of this facility is that it enables you to have different types of bandwidth accounts assigned to different destinations,” added Love. “For example, you can use an ADSL account with international access for Internet access (a more expensive type of bandwidth), and then you can use a local only account, which is cheaper, for e-mail, off-site backups and VPN connections, provided they are hosted locally.

“This functionality is currently under development by DrayTek and will be available later this year,” continued Love. “However, as an interim measure, it is possible, for instance on the Vigor 2820, to connect an Ethernet cable from the WAN interface and connect it to the LAN interface, which allows you to configure the WAN with a second PPPoE ADSL account. It is then possible to configure your load balance policies, routing, etc, as you would normally do so.

“We would like to thank Platformity for sharing this solution with us. We will be making further announcements on DrayTek's situation when they have provided us with the planned development,” concluded Love.
