A slew of whistle-blowers with allegations of dubious conduct by senior managers and executives at MTN SA are behind the recent disciplinary action, resignations and suspensions at the telecoms giant, reports City Press.

This is reportedly according to Robert Madzonga, MTN SA's chief corporate services officer, who was recently suspended allowing a preliminary investigation into suspicious payments to certain firms to be completed.

Madzonga's urgent Labour Court application to lift his suspension was dismissed with costs on Friday, but a separate defamation case continues. In a statement released by MTN yesterday, the company says it opposed Madzonga's court bid, successfully arguing that his continued presence in the workplace could cause instability and jeopardise ongoing investigations against him.

Madzonga said MTN decided to suspend him after he lodged a grievance against three of its executives, says the statement. "He also attributed his suspension to allegations of misconduct against him for which he received a warning in 2011, arguing that he was therefore protected by the doctrine of double jeopardy."

MTN convinced the court that new information had come to light that necessitated further investigations against Madzonga, says the company.

Meanwhile, MTN SA has initiated a KPMG audit investigation into executives and senior managers in the company, says City Press.

Claims that the telecoms company are unfairly selective in who it punishes, are reportedly doing the rounds. Madzonga is supposedly one such executive who feels he is being unfairly treated, and denies all allegations made against him.

In response to questions from City Press, MTN SA said: "As part of the ongoing process of ensuring proper and effectibe management, MTN commissioned an audit which was conducted by KPMG."
