The MakerSpace has issued a call for sponsorship of 100 orphans in Durban to take part in an introduction to technology course this weekend at the House and Garden Show.

The organisation has capacity for 150 children and has already sponsorship for 50.

One of the facilitators of the course, Stephen Gray, says: "The world is changing so rapidly and traditional is not preparing children for the future of work. The only way to ensure children are prepared for the future is to give them access to the technology and techniques of this next industrial revolution.

"We are calling on sponsors to cover the cost of a child to attend three workshops and a lunch pack, which will cost a sponsor R300 per child. We are challenging individuals to sponsor one child and companies to sponsor 10."

Gray is also founder of Durban's MakerSpace, where 3D printers and other tech is available for people to learn to make things instead of buying them from a retail outlet.

The MakerSpace will run the workshops over the course of the show.

There will be several different sessions which are open to the general public too ? adults and children alike. These include an intro to 3D print pens, making a 'Doodlebot' machine, building a syringe-powered cardboard robot arm, learning to solder, 3D scanning and then 3D printing a person's head, and various science experiments.

Anyone interested in sponsoring can e-mail cari@themakerspace.co.za, or steve@themakerspace.co.za.

Gray says the MakerSpace will give a tax certificate to anyone sponsoring over R10 000, through its NPO partner.
