Dutch cable operator Casema enhances digital infrastructure with Alcatel optical CWDM solution

By Alcatel
Johannesburg, 19 Nov 2003

Alcatel today announced that it has signed a three-year frame agreement with NV Casema, a leading Dutch cable and data operator.

Alcatel`s optical transmission solution will enable Casema to enhance its Gigabit Ethernet network and expand its service offering, including cable and digital TV, Internet access and data-communication services for Dutch business and residential users.

Casema will be the first operator in the Netherlands to deploy Alcatel`s cost-effective coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) system, the Alcatel 1692 Metro Span Edge, designed for metro access and enterprise networks. Providing a cost-optimised managed platform adapted to diversified data networking needs, this scalable system enables incremental upgrades to meet evolving traffic needs.

The new equipment will be supervised by Alcatel`s integrated network management platform allowing operators like Casema to optimise bandwidth usage to cope with end-users` demands for fast and reliable broadband service roll-out.

Under the terms of the frame agreement, a maintenance contract was also signed for Casema`s complete data transmission network, which is based on Alcatel`s synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) technology.

"Casema is committed to continuously upgrading its communication network to keep pace with rapidly changing technological developments," said Jos Molenkamp, CEO of Casema. "Leveraging our solid cooperation with Alcatel and its global leadership in optical networking, we will be well positioned to give our customers access to the most advanced services and technologies available."

"Casema will extend its service reach in the metro access area with the deployment of Alcatel`s CWDM technology while delivering higher flexibility and reliability in the network to keep pace with its customers` increasing data service requirements," said Romano Valussi, president of Alcatel`s optical network activities.

Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM)

CWDM is a transparent transport technology that provides extra capacity on fibres in the metro area and extends the access part of the network. It is protocol independent and enables the transmission - over typically 8 wavelengths up to one hundred kilometres - of multiple services, such as traditional leased lines, Gigabit Ethernet and SAN applications.
