Duxbury Networking expands Soweto schools project

Johannesburg, 11 Nov 2009

Duxbury Networking, now in its seventh year of partnership with Kingsmead College, has expanded its computer literacy training programme for school teachers and administrators in Soweto.

The company has developed a skills development programme, written by Duxbury Academy training manager Warren Roberson, which he is presenting to the administrative staff of a number of primary schools in the township.

“The object of the programme is to provide admin staff and teachers with working as well as applied knowledge of computer systems, which they can use to streamline their day-to-day activities,” says Roberson.

“With the government placing added emphasis on education, we foresee that the need for computer skills development training programmes in historically disadvantaged communities will continue unabated.

“Although some of these communities do have access to computer resources, they have had limited or no access to training on how to practically and effectively apply technology in their working environment,” he says.

Gillian Wilkinson, headmistress at Kingsmead College, confirms that the clerks and administrators at the schools involved in the programme have benefited considerably from the training courses.

“It's encouraging to see the difference the training makes to the levels of efficiency within the administrative offices of the schools - and how the schools' principals are benefiting as a result,” she says.

The Duxbury Training Academy has also developed a 'student access' database designed to assist administrative staff in the preparation of student records and the processing and dissemination of examination results.

The training programme consists of 12 training modules delivered in two phases. Modules one to seven are for beginners, while modules eight to 12 are for advanced students. All modules are computer-based, instructor-led and group-paced in a classroom environment.

Module 1: Directory structures
Module 2: Creating templates in Microsoft
Module 3: Introduction to Excel
Module 4: Introduction to PowerPoint
Module 5: Introduction to Word
Module 6: Introduction to Access
Module 7: Introduction to Windows XP
Module 8: Advanced Microsoft Word
Module 9: Advanced Microsoft Excel
Module 10: Advanced Microsoft PowerPoint
Module 11: Practical usage of Email
Module 12: Orientation on the Internet

Both phases are characterised by revision sessions, practical assessments and student evaluation sessions.
