Duxbury supports new fibre-to-desktop solution

Johannesburg, 25 Nov 1999

The new MT-RJ connector system, designed to provide a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for the installation of fibre-optic cable in the enterprise, is gaining momentum.

"With major industry backing the MT-RJ concept, it is rising to become the de facto standard connection device for backbone and campus fibre optic networks," says Graham Vorster, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking.

Duxbury is adding its weight to the standard with the launch of a range of MT-RJ-compatible equipment, components and connecting hardware.

"Network integrators contemplating the greater benefits of fibre cabling now have no barriers to installing fibre cables from campus to backbone to desktop," says Vorster.

He says a key criteria for the adoption of MT-RJ is performance benefits.

"For example, transceivers will soon reach market that span from 10BASE-FL through Gigabit Ethernet LX/LH over single mode fibre.

"We also believe that MT-RJ is positioned to be the most cost-competitive solution in fibre to the desktop applications. This will allow integrators to use one small-form-factor fibre connector across all points," he says.

More than 45 companies now supply the complete set of MT-RJ compatible equipment, including switches, routers and hubs, connectors, patch cords and patch panels, network interface cards (NICs), media converters, MT-RJ outlets, cleaning kits, field-installable connectors and loop backs.

Virtually all major network equipment vendors have endorsed the MT-RJ system and are shipping compatible switches, routers and hubs. The new NICs, converters and other products will make it possible to connect copper and fibre together for integrated systems.

Vorster adds that network architects and cable installers in South Africa are embracing the MT-RJ system due to its increased density, lower cost, and exceptional performance.
