The government Green Paper on e-commerce will be launched to the public on Monday, after being delayed several times.
Minister of communications Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri is expected to head the launch, and will be sharing the podium with Reserve Bank deputy governor Gill Marcus, and South African Revenue Services commissioner Pravin Gordhan.
The department says the paper is a first step towards a formal policy, and is targeted at experts in the technology field as well as individuals and enterprises using e-commerce.
"In eliciting input from these instances, the Green Paper addresses many of the challenges regarding the development and implementation of e-commerce in SA," said the department of communications in a media release.
"Among the most important benefits of e-commerce are extended market reach and increased revenue potential. Government feels that, in order to maximise these benefits, policy should be geared towards removing barriers, developing strategies that will enhance and exploit the opportunities brought by e-commerce, and designing programmes to spur economic growth."
According to the department, interested parties can submit written responses to the paper before 28 February 2001.
