e-Secure Distribution, South African distributor of all Blue Coat Systems products, is both excited and surprised about the strong increase in demand in the local market this year for security software that speeds up wide area networks (WAN), while offering improved security.
"WAN acceleration is widely accepted as the buzz-word of the moment," says Business Unit Manager at e-Secure Distribution, Francois van Hirtum.
"We find ourselves in the fortunate position of offering a combined solution to large corporations that not only takes care of WAN acceleration by speeding up file services, data centre backups, video content, SSL applications and Web applications, but at the same time provides high-quality security solutions.
"These range from the elimination of spyware to managing Web traffic, preventing malware and controlling data leakage to regulating P2P applications. These benefits that we can deliver through the implementation of Blue Coat and MACH5 have significantly boosted our business over the past three months.
"To date, South African organisations have largely disregarded the latest regulations and recommendations with regard to IT security and the like," says Van Hirtum. "A lack of enforcement has failed to drive home the importance of new information security legislation, and companies are choosing to rather focus on investments that provide direct benefits, such as high connectivity or enterprise resource management solutions."
Van Hirtum believes organisations should examine all of their key applications when evaluating application acceleration solutions. "In fact, they should look ahead to what applications are coming, and how networks are evolving - given the large-scale nature of deploying remote office acceleration capabilities. Blue Coat's MACH5 application acceleration technology draws on ten years of industry-leading application performance experience - accelerating all key enterprise applications (even encrypted application) - while maintaining control of non-critical applications."
Blue Coat Systems' SG line of WAN accelerators builds on traditional WAN optimisation methods by adding a couple of their own, including support for SSL encrypted traffic and streaming media. Based on a series of protocol and application-specific proxies, the SG appliances balance flexibility and performance with ease of use, and they support bandwidth management, object caching, byte caching, protocol optimisation and compression.
