Gaming developer Electronic Arts (EA) Sports has designed a video game called 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa, which will be will be available on PS3, Xbox360, PSP, and Wii. This is the only official and exclusively licensed video game for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the company says.
Ralph Spinks of EA SA says the videogame reflects “true-to-life” details of the tournament. “It features all 199 national teams that took part in the qualifying rounds, and includes all 10 officially licensed stadiums to be used in SA and stadiums from each qualifying region.”
Everything fans love about the World Cup comes to life, including confetti cannons, streamers, and fireworks - just like the official tournament, Spinks says. To give the game an authentic South African feel, gamers will be able to hear vuvuzelas while playing the game, adding to the overall experience of the World Cup.
Tournament feel
Spinks says for the first time, gamers will be able to play out the 2010 Fifa World Cup in a full and authentic online tournament mode and will be able to compete under the same conditions real-world heroes will face in SA. From the group stage through the knockout rounds, gamers stand to be crowned the 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa champion.
According to EA, the videogame features “home and away tactics”, where the CPU mimics international football, by creating strategic, defensive formations for weaker teams playing away from home. Plus, weaker teams raise their level of play on their home pitch.
In addition, it features altitude effects. “Where there is less air resistance at altitude, the ball will travel faster and further. Players will tire more quickly and their stamina will be challenged while playing in cities at higher elevations versus sea level,” the company explains.
“For fans of nations that failed to qualify, this is the chance to replay and rewrite history, as well as earn individual and team points to prove their nation is the best in Battle of the Nations,” Spinks says.
Additional features
EA also teamed up with Coca-Cola Zero to offer a free online service called The Coca-Cola Zero Story of the Finals, for the 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa videogame. The feature will enable gamers to relive crucial moments from the actual tournament hours after games have been played, EA says. “The service from EA Sports will be available for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system.”
The Coca-Cola Zero Story of the Finals will enable gamers connected online to play real matches from the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final and face the same challenges their heroes experienced throughout the tournament.
“This is an ambitious and completely unique feature that has never before been attempted for football videogames,” said executive producer Kaz Makita. “The hopes and dreams of nations will rise and fall throughout the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final and within hours after the real matches have occurred, our development team will recreate the storylines in our game and provide fans the opportunity to replay and, perhaps, change the outcome - virtually.”
