South African CIOs and enterprise architects heard the latest news and trends from The Open Group at the Enterprise Architecture Practitioner's Conference, held at Cape Town's Sheraton hotel last week.
The Open Group is a vendor-neutral consortium, which aims to provide organisations with a framework and associated tools to implement flexible information architecture.
The conference, which was hosted by local Open Group representative Real IRM Solutions, saw a number of local and international experts present enterprise architecture trends and case studies to nearly 200 local delegates.
"Enterprise architecture is all about creating real business value," said Stuart Macgregor, CE of Real IRM Solutions. He said it was encouraging that so many large local companies were adopting the Open Group's enterprise architecture framework (TOGAF) so that they can get the quick wins while making sure that their strategic capability was viable in the long term.
A number of the speakers were from local organisations that have either started or are well into implementing architecture frameworks. "It's been very helpful to hear how South African companies are leveraging Open Group methodologies," said one senior CIO. "TOGAF may seem 'airy-fairy' but what it does is help you understand your business processes so that you can architect something that won't go out of date."
