Java application development has taken another significant step towards simplification with Sun Microsystems' announcement of a second phase Technology Ppreview for Sun Java Studio Creator, code-named 'Project Rave'.
Says Sean O'Hare, Java Systems Engineer at Sun Microsystems SA: "Project Rave promises a giant step forward for Java application development. Despite the numerous advantages of the Java platform, it is a complex and challenging one on which to develop applications - Project Rave addresses just this issue by providing developers with a simplified development model with reusable components, lowering the barrier to entry to produce high-quality programs."
Java Studio Creator applications deploy to the Sun Java System Application Server, or any other Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition-compatible server, breaking the vendor lock-in enforced by other tools.
The first phase of the Technology Preview program for Java Studio Creator drew the participation of more than 100 developers representing a diverse set of industries including financial services, telecommunications, the automotive industry, air carriers, and hi-tech and biotechnology firms.
"Sun is rapidly applying the Preview feedback, which is being used to fine-tune both the tool itself and the support infrastructure around it. Results of this work includes examples, tutorials and application blueprints," continues O'Hare.
Java Studio Creator incorporates key elements developers and IT departments can rely upon to develop and deploy reliable and secure multi-tier distributed applications. Features include drag-and-drop layouts of user interfaces and component infrastructures that provide consistent look and feel of applications and simplified access to databases and Web services.
The public early access release is scheduled for early Q2, 2004.
