SMC, specialist in products for small and medium-sized LANs with a low cost of ownership, has released a dual-speed Ethernet repeater in which each port can operate in either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps. Greg Perkins, country manager for SMC in SA, says the SMC EZ Hub 10/100 is auto-sensing, which allows each port to automatically determine the operating speed of an attached device and channel data to the appropriate (10 Mbps or 100 Mbps) repeater bus. "As a result, any port on the hub can offer either Ethernet or Fast Ethernet connectivity," he says. "The means that Fast Ethernet devices can seamlessly be incorporated into existing legacy Ethernet networks and that the network itself can be gradually upgraded to the faster standard." Perkins describes this product as indicative of the companies commitment to enabling cost-effective Fast Ethernet migration. "Not only does the EZ Hub 10/100 save the cost of having to replace existing 10 Mbps equipment, but its low price-per-port makes it one of the best value propositions on the market today," he adds. SMC`s EZ Hub 10/100 is available in either 12 or 24 port versions supporting either 10 BASE-T or 100 BASE-TX topologies. Port 1 on both models is switch-selectable and can be used as a crossover port or a daisychain port. In addition, if this port is disabled, the MII (Media Independent Interface) port located on the rear-panel of the hub becomes Port 1. This MII port can, with the appropriate transceiver, support 100BASE-FX or 100BASE-T4 media. SMC`s line of LAN network products includes the EZ and Tiger lines.
