Easirun Software has developed a Software system to control crop irrigation on some of the country`s largest farms. Bobaas Boere Dienste, supplies, installs and support the software to 64 farms located throughout Gauteng, the Free State and the Northern Cape, these farmers utilise the software to irrigate vegetables, wheat, melies, citrus, cotton, grapes and tobacco.
According to the owner of Bobaas Boere Dienste, Billy Geldenhuys, the software is installed on PCs on each farm and regulates the quantity of water to be dispersed onto the crops.
"This is a very scientific approach to irrigation and it ensures successful crops time after time. Based on the farmers inputs the software calculates the duration of each irrigation session as well as the quantity of water to be released. The system helps the farmers to save water, which is a vital consideration. It also assists with improved crop quality and helps the farmers to plan our production schedules. In fact, users of the software have experienced a 50 percent increase in production following the installation of the system," said Geldenhuys.
Easirun Software is a division of Easirun, the largest distributor of Cobol products in Africa and one of the country`s leading providers of Cobol-based solutions and services.
Charmaine Strydom, managing director, Easirun Software, said the division has established itself as one of the leading software houses for customised solutions developed mostly using Cobol and Visual Basic.
"The software package we developed for Bobaas Boere Denste is based on scientific parameters that are built into the system. They are adjusted annually depending on the unique characteristics of each farm such as rainfall and other climatic conditions," she said.
Geldenhuys said the system`s ease-of-use, its scientific approach and thorough personal support combine to make it a vital management tool for his customers
