The Eastern Cape government`s Social Development Department will soon go online as it attempts to bridge the divide while rooting out corruption.

Social grant applicants in the Eastern Cape will be able to access their applications and queries on the departmental Web site at www.socdev.ecprov.gov.za.

About 1.3 million of the Eastern Cape`s population of 6.4 million people are social grants beneficiaries.

The department says it hopes the move will bridge the divide in the province and eliminate and corruption.

The Eastern Cape, one of the country`s poorest provinces, has been plagued by fraud involving social grants, especially pensions. This has led to a number of public-private initiatives to combat such crime.

The public has been urged to use the site to expose such acts, or report them through the departmental fraud toll-free number 0800 601 011.
