The Shuttleworth Foundation`s tuXlab is aiming to break its own installation record by putting open source into 12 Eastern Cape schools.

Called the tuXlab Mega Install, the event on 13 August is aimed at promoting open source software in schools and improving the lives of learners in one of the country`s poorest provinces.

As part of the drive to bring tuXlab to the Eastern Cape, the Shuttleworth Foundation reached an agreement with the Ubuntu Fund, which will see the two parties sharing resources to grow the tuXlab program in the region.

"The Ubuntu Fund collaboration has strengthened the tuXlab program in the Eastern Cape," says tuXlab spokesperson Hilton Theunissen.

He also feels the program has gained added momentum due to the Department of Education`s support.

The tuXlab Mega Install will see 12 open source-based computer labs being installed in three hours. If the tuXlab team is able to complete this successfully, it will eclipse its own record of installing 10 labs in one day during an event on Youth Day, 16 June, in the Western Cape.

TuXlab utilises open source software to provide learners with access to curriculum-based educational content as well as the opportunity to learn basic computing skills. The Shuttleworth Foundation says open source software allows freedom of choice, reduces the setup and maintenance costs of computer labs, and is freely available with no annual licensing fees.

Mkangeli Matomela, education MEC in the Eastern Cape, will participate by visiting some of the schools during the installation.

Engen will provide 300 computers to the tuXlab program and Computers4kids will supply curriculum-based learning programs for use in the labs. A group of volunteers from the Port Elizabeth Linux User Group will provide their time and experience.
