EDS Africa introduces Electronic Business Security Services

Johannesburg, 18 Aug 1999

EDS Africa has announced the availability in this country of an Electronic Business Services (EBSS) solution which provides companies with the tight security framework essential for large-scale, business-to-business Web transactions.

EBSS addresses in detail every phase of a client`s electronic business environment - from managing security and authorising user access to recovery.

"This is the most comprehensive and integrated solution on the market today," says EDS Africa director, Susie Thompson. "No other available security offering gives clients the high level assurance that will allow them to focus on their core business and extend their enterprise - without worries about privacy, confidentiality, or protecting their data."

EBSS focuses on identification, authentication and authorisation services - verifying that the people you`re dealing with electronically are exactly who they say they are and that they are authorised to do what they are attempting to do.

Safeguards include Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs) - digital certificates validated by a trustworthy third party process that verifies a user`s identity before granting system access. Authorisation applications include single sign-on, access control and identification techniques. Identification processes cover the use of smartcards, tokens or even "biometric" methods, such as digital fingerprinting or eye scanning.

"But EBSS is more than a set of digital locks and chains on sensitive information," Thompson says. "Because data is more secure, we can help clients move toward realising the most important thing electronic business has to offer - the acquisition and intelligent use of customer information, leading to closer, longer-lasting customer relationships."

EBSS is the latest of the e-business solutions made available by EDS` E.Solutions unit.

The unit is focused on moving EDS customers into the global digital economy and helping to transform their business processes. It applies an array of electronic business technologies which enable companies to create and fulfill demand, and performs the Internet computing to support these activities. Service offerings range from digital supply chain management to legacy transformation services.
