EDS`s agile infrastructure provides on-demand resources to drive client agility

Company has been leading real-time infrastructure strategy for more than two years
Johannesburg, 28 May 2003

EDS has announced its comprehensive set of initiatives and services delivering on-demand, utility services to clients on their terms. EDS is the only company providing total integration services, from the boardroom to the back-office, linking business processes with IT infrastructure.

The agile infrastructure architecture encompasses business process services (BPS) and Web services delivered through an industrial-strength agile infrastructure. EDS integrates best-of-breed technology into this infrastructure environment to improve clients` agility. According to industry analysts, the company has implemented its vision of the infrastructure layer faster than competitors.

"Hardware vendors are pushing utility computing on their terms, their hardware," said Doug Frederick, EDS executive vice-president. "This is our party, we set the table two years ago and continue to consistently serve our clients on their terms."

EDS` agile infrastructure architecture encompasses services at three levels: Hardware infrastructure - the capability to deliver utility computing to clients in a secure and recoverable environment.

* EDS recently launched a new capability within its data centre infrastructure, facilitated by Ejasent software, enabling real-time metering of the amount of processing power used and allocating processing power based on client needs.

* EDS also uses Opsware technology to automate the management of complex computing environments within one of the world`s largest IT infrastructures.

* EDS launched the industry`s first hosting offering ensuring 100% availability for Web sites and applications backed by a time-to-repair commitment.

Web services and applications - a standardised way to develop and deploy enterprise software applications.

This approach allows applications on different platforms and in various enterprises to interact with minimal effort. Results include reduced integration costs and greater agility in how companies adapt to change and:

* Communicate with their partners and customers;

* Gain visibility to the right information at the right time across a virtual enterprise;

* Reduce the high cost of developing and maintaining applications interfaces and the time needed to deploy new software components;

* Integrate business, system and human processes to increase business velocity; and

* Create an application environment that allows more flexibility and agility to quickly react to changing market conditions. Business transaction and process services - transaction-based processing and the industry`s best people, processes, consulting and IT services.

These services include cheque processing, credit card processing, claims processing and invoice processing at the transaction level. EDS is also the rare provider offering a full range of business process services to help its clients combat growing costs associated with non-core processes. These services include customer relationship management (CRM), financial process management (FPM), and administrative and enterprise shared services, which includes human resources, finance and accounting and procurement services enabling clients to:

* Accelerate growth by focusing on core business processes;

* Reduce costs associated with non-core business processes, thereby increasing resources that can be invested in people and technology;

* Achieve economies of scale by leveraging a shared services model that integrates back-office operations, increases productivity and service levels and leverages EDS` Best Shore locations; and

* Eliminate overhead by trading fixed costs for variable costs.

"Agility is the capacity of an enterprise to anticipate changing market dynamics, adapt to those dynamics, and accelerate enterprise change to create economic value," said Frederick. "EDS is second to none in evaluating a client`s level of agility, and identifying solutions to help them deliver value for stakeholders."
