SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group and the southern African enterprise partner for eEye Digital Security, today announced that the latter's award-winning endpoint security product, Blink and Retina, its industry-leading network security scanner, are able to identify and protect enterprises from a security vulnerability found within the Remote Desktop Services portion of the Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems.
Currently, eEye is the only software vendor to provide protection against this vulnerability in lieu of a software patch from Microsoft.
"Business continuity is a major responsibility for enterprise IT, so the threat of denial of service is a serious concern," stated Marc Maiffret, eEye's chief hacking officer.
"Thanks to the diligence and expertise of our research and development teams, Blink has been confirmed to be the only endpoint solution to already offer protection against this vulnerability to our enterprise customers. Not only does Blink stop this denial of service from working, but it allows organisations to continue to use Remote Desktop Protocol for their business needs."
This security issue affects a large majority of Windows systems currently used by enterprises around the world. This high-risk security vulnerability could potentially allow an attacker to send a specially crafted Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) request to an affected system, which would result in a denial of service. For an enterprise with thousands of Windows-based machines, many running critical applications, this represents a dramatic threat to business continuity. To date, Microsoft has not issued a patch for this security flaw.
While technical details of the vulnerability have not been publicly disclosed, eEye's research team, which has discovered more critical security vulnerabilities than any other organisation, has been able to replicate the vulnerability and provide a fix for its customers without disclosing any information that could be used to exploit the vulnerability. Blink, the most comprehensive and powerful endpoint security software introduced to date, is able to protect enterprises through its unique approach to intrusion prevention that focuses on methods of exploit, rather than attack signatures. As a result, an enterprise can keep all of its Windows-based machines up and running without having to engage in security measures that may impact its business communications.
In addition, eEye's industry-leading Retina network security scanner is able to quickly scan global enterprise networks to identify vulnerable machines.
