Election watch

US election insanity prevails, and what better place to spectate than on the Internet?

US citizens have started casting electronic ballots in four states, including Florida, site of Bush`s grand larceny in the last election. New polls are being thrown up daily to prove that one or the other candidate is in the lead.

What really concerns me is that it was apathy that got Bush elected in the first place, and that now, in the wake of him totally botching his presidency, the polls are indicating that democrats are still not galvanised into flocking to vote.

But there are voices online that prove that some Americans are still capable of thinking for themselves, and are pushing to see John Kerry, the sane voter`s choice, elected.

Moby, music producer, staunch liberal, vegan, Christian and writer of an online journal (he despises the term "blog"), is vociferous in his criticism of Bush.

Through his involvement in various organisations, like Moveon.org, he is spearheading the non-apathetic liberals movement. Where his journal, which can be found at www.moby.com, was in the past a tribute to vegetarian food and a record of the weather and his tour exploits, it is now dedicated to the daily denouncement of George W Bush.

Many celebrities have, in fact, spoken out in support of Kerry, and donated funds to his campaign. Australian site smh.com.au has published a list of those high-profile A-listers who are involved in this campaign.

Most notable celebrity who is not behind Kerry is Britney Spears, whose famous brainless quote, "I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that," on Michael Moore`s anti-Bush documentary, Fahrenheit 911, is indicative of a frightening lack of consideration on the part of the icon of American youth.

On the other hand, Moore is one of the strongest counter-voices, even after he was resoundingly "booed" for his political comments at the post-911 Academy Awards. His site is dedicated to the publicity of anti-Bush sentiment, and he also pushes for the US nation`s democrats to rise up. He also has one hell of a sense of humour, and the intelligence behind his tirades makes him a compelling proponent of the Kerry cause.

Moveon.org was started by two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who were frustrated with the waste of America`s resources at the time of the impeachment of Bill Clinton. The site tries to get citizens involved in democratic initiatives, sponsors competitions where people are encouraged to create advertising campaigns bringing home the truth about Bush, and generally humanises politics as much as possible.

To keep abreast of the latest polls without internal US spin, visit the BBC`s US election poll tracker, which also rounds up all key news around the elections. One of the most featured pollsters is Gallup, which has been consistently showing Bush ahead of Kerry, despite other pollsters reflecting the opposite.

Moveon.org had plenty to say about that in an ad it recently placed in the New York Times. Although the polls do have the ability to swing election coverage, which does affect the final outcome, we can only hope that Gallup`s misdirection will backfire and encourage apathetic democrats to fight back at the voting stations.

Come on, Americans, get out there and vote! The world will be a safer place without that lunatic at the helm of your nation.
