Embarcadero Africa, provider of application and database lifecycle management solutions, has announced the release of Embarcadero Performance Centre 1.5, which adds seamless monitoring of Sybase servers to that of Oracle databases and intelligently integrates with Embarcadero SQL Tuner and DBArtisan.
Performance Centre, a product established in April last year, gives database administrators (DBAs) the ability to judge total database performance, ensuring that all databases in an organisation are available and running at peak performance. Features include a health index, which is a single statistic that conveys the overall health of enterprise databases.
"Performance management is probably the most important aspect of caring for a database, but is also often the most neglected," says Alan Raubenheimer, CEO of Embarcadero Africa. "This is because the DBA is scared of making a mistake and destroying the entire system. Performance Centre removes the necessity for additional technical experience in performance tuning the database."
Raubenheimer, formerly of Sybase, spent over 10 years as a database consultant before joining Embarcadero as CEO of its Africa operation.
New features in Performance Centre 1.5 include:
. Seamless enterprise view of Oracle and Sybase databases through a single interface;
. Single click integration with DBArtisan and SQL Tuner allowing DBAs to correct issues detected by the product;
. A 24x7 monitoring solution with historical reports allowing users to evaluate database performance at a glance, track performance over time and report issues within the enterprise.
The server and client components run on Microsoft Windows platforms and databases, including Sybase 11.9.2 and higher, and Oracle from version 7.3 to version 8.x (with 9.x support due in the next release), and can be monitored on any network-connected platform.
"What sets Performance Centre apart is a high degree of reporting allowing the database administrator to deliver comprehensive reports in HTML format which can easily be published to a corporate intranet or the Internet. DBAs often find it difficult to communicate database statistics properly to management, so this functionality goes a long way in the real world, adding to the DBA`s value," says Raubenheimer. Embarcadero next plans on incorporating Microsoft SQL Server into Performance Centre.
Embarcadero is strongly committed to keeping pace with new database version releases and the practices surrounding those releases, which means there are usually minor new version releases of its product every quarter.
Says Raubenheimer: "DBAs` jobs are not usually single-platform, cut and dried tasks, which is why it is important to maintain pace with the industry."
The initial purchase of Embarcadero Performance Centre includes a free of charge first year support and maintenance contract with an annual renewal option. This contract includes free new version releases.
