Embarcadero brings database management into the mainstream

Johannesburg, 30 Jul 2002

Embarcadero Africa has announced the local availability of its Performance Center solution for maximising database availability and performance.

Embarcadero Performance Center provides database professionals with an industrial-strength portal into complete performance management. By supplying an automated strategy for identifying problems that threaten the availability and performance of Oracle, Sybase, and Microsoft databases, Embarcadero Performance Center ensures that relational database management systems enjoy maximum uptime and deliver performance exceeding user expectations.

Embarcadero Performance Center is designed to integrate into a database administrator`s work schedule by offering methods to effectively monitor and control the performance of databases. It identifies performance problems throughout the business, and helps database professionals prioritise their performance tuning workload.

"Under-performing or unavailable production databases can severely compromise a business," says Alan Raubenheimer, CEO of Embarcadero Africa. "Maintaining high availability and performance is vital, but not at the costs normally associated with enterprise-strength database management tools, or with the number of database administrators (DBAs) typically associated with the discipline. Budgets are under pressure, and IT management is mandated with providing the business with the support it needs, at an affordable cost.

"Performance Center is designed to provide the functionality management needs, at an appropriate price point." Ever-increasing volumes and growing databases have rendered obsolete traditional techniques for diagnosing and troubleshooting performance problems. What database professionals need are clear and concise methods for ensuring the viability of every database they manage.

Performance Center contains features for helping DBAs spot the performance issues that can impact an organisation`s bottom line.

Using the Enterprise Portal view, DBAs can:

* Observe Oracle, Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server relational databases in a single view.

* Decipher, at a glance, which databases are up or down at any point.

* Spot Oracle Listeners that are malfunctioning and preventing client access to the database.

* Quickly find poorly performing databases with the Embarcadero Health Index and interrogate them in more detail to locate the exact cause of any problems. It does this by sampling critical statistics in the areas of memory, I/O, contention, space, network, objects, users, and SQL.

* Locate databases with active problems.

In conjunction with the above, the Enterprise Alarm Center is a single interface that allows DBAs to view all identified problems in every database they manage. Using the Alarm Center, DBAs can pinpoint critical problems for their most visible databases; and view key information and alarms regarding problems for all monitored databases.

DBAs can choose how and under what conditions they want to be notified of database problems: pager, e-mail or system broadcast notification.

"Administrators need two attributes if they are to guarantee the availability and performance of databases," adds Raubenheimer. "The first is 24x7 coverage for the most visible databases in the business, which allows problems to be detected proactively regardless of when they occur, and before they threaten a database`s health. The second is real-time monitoring capabilities that allow DBAs to drill down into every detail of a database`s performance so they can locate the root cause of any response problems."

Performance Center was designed from the ground up to accomplish both styles of performance analysis and protection. Performance Center enables DBAs to initiate an unattended, "lights out" monitoring schedule for early problem detection and notification.

"Most systems management tools with this level of functionality will cost millions, take months to install and require the skills of highly qualified implementation staff," concludes Raubenheimer. "This means most companies cannot cost-justify their implementation, with negative consequences for the business. Performance Center will help them bridge this disconnect."
