Embarcadero Technologies Africa has announced the local availability of DT/Studio, its entry into the data integration market. DT/Studio is an extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) application that enables rapid data integration for data migration, application integration and data warehousing.
The ETL sector is growing at a rate well ahead of the rest of the IT market, driven by the requirement to gain a single views of customers, and by associated business intelligence drivers.
However, ETL functionality has tended to be the preserve of the largest corporations with the deepest pockets and access to the broadest skills base, says Alan Raubenheimer, CEO of Embarcadero Africa. This has limited their takeup and meant that companies with modest budgets and limited IT departments have had to do without, no matter how urgent their need.
"DT/Studio changes that," says Raubenheimer. "For the first time, advanced data integration is being made affordable and therefore accessible to any organisation for increased efficiency in data integration projects."
Gartner says more than 80% of companies currently use home-grown routines to migrate data rather than buy a packaged ETL solution. But these tools do not provide users with the flexibility, usability and scalability that data professionals demand.
DT/Studio addresses these issues. It allows users easily to move and work with data from multiple sources to any target location or application through three simple steps.
. First, DT/Studio reverse-engineers existing operational data, aided through a seamless integration with Embarcadero`s ER/Studio data modelling tool.
. Once the architecture of the data is established, DT/Studio transforms the data from the original source into the data format established by the user.
. DT/Studio then populates the target repository or application at the optimum speed required, preventing interruption in enterprise workflow with the operational data.
"Global 2000 companies too often rely on home-grown solutions for data movement and integration in order to complete critical data warehousing, database integration and application migration projects," says Susan Funke, research manager for IDC. "DT/Studio should improve IT efficiency for data integration, removing a key bottleneck that impacts the completion of important projects on time and under budget."
"The common misconception is that ETL software use is limited to populating complex data warehouses," adds Raubenheimer. "Data warehousing was considered to be the only project large enough to justify the budget needed for an ETL application. However, ETL tools provide value in a number of data integration projects, such as application integration and data migration. With the release of DT/Studio, Embarcadero brings the power of ETL to a price level where decision-makers can easily implement ETL in a variety of projects with immediate benefits of increased efficiency and speed to project completion."
Benefits
.
Open platform:
Customisation and configuration of ETL tools has always been a challenge for data administrators. Proprietary ETL systems require additional training and time to tailor to the needs of individual organisations. Using a Java-based server, DT/Studio`s open platform allows users easily to write new functions to databases using Java and XML.
.
Cross-platform support:
With most application vendors using multiple database platforms and file types, managing and integrating these disparate data sources can be challenging. DT/Studio`s complete cross-platform support allows easy integration of all data sources into any target repository or application.
.
Scalability:
In order to be effective as data continues to grow, ETL tools must be able to process large amounts of data in specific time windows. DT/Studio meets these requirements, allowing organisations to update their target repositories and applications without affecting operational data.
.
Usability:
Most ETL solutions are difficult to use and need days of installation time and troubleshooting. DT/Studio`s graphical interface uses wizards, a drag-and-drop interface and a powerful scripting language to allow everyone from novice administrators to data experts to migrate data quickly and efficiently. In addition, DT/Studio`s Java foundation makes it easy to use and configure, and users can have it up and running in 30 minutes.
