Embarcadero partners with IBM in insurance market

Johannesburg, 08 Aug 2002

Embarcadero Technologies, the provider of application and database lifecycle management solutions, has announced a strategic relationship with IBM and its Insurance Application Architecture (IAA) Organisation, including the key Insurance Information Warehouse (IIW) component.

The affiliation signals the alignment of Embarcadero`s Describe and ER/Studio - its application and data modelling tools, respectively - with IBM`s IAA business and data models developed specifically for the insurance market. The new relationship will make IBM`s IAA and IIW models available in Embarcadero`s Describe and ER/Studio software.

"With this alliance, Embarcadero is positioned to serve companies in the insurance industry, whose business challenges are more easily and efficiently understood and overcome with the IAA models and standards," says Alan Raubenheimer, CEO of Embarcadero Africa. "For customers building customisable applications based on IAA, we offer tools that produce more manageable applications while increasing IT productivity. IBM`s insurance clients will be able to use Embarcadero`s development tools - Describe and ER/Studio - to deliver applications and databases that accurately reflect the needs of the business."

IBM`s IAA and IIW are business, object and data models designed to help insurance companies better apply IT to their business. IBM`s IAA models have been developed by IBM and more than 40 leading international insurance companies to accommodate all lines of the insurance business, irrespective of technical or organisational constraints. The IIW data warehouse downloads, analyses and scores data from various sources.

"As IAA continues to build on its strong customer set, the importance of strategic relationships with vendors offering solutions to IAA customers increases," says Ian Bowring, IBM IAA sales manager. "Embarcadero`s object and data modelling tools make it an excellent choice for insurance companies which need to develop high-quality applications."

Describe, a UML (Unified Modelling Language) design and development tool, offers rich enterprise UML features and productivity-focused development utilities. In addition, Describe provides developer utilities embedded in the IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer and other leading Java IDEs. ER/Studio, a data modelling application, enables data architects to manage, document and communicate IBM`s IAA models to the enterprise. Developers and DBAs can forward engineer database applications directly from the IAA model templates to platforms such as IBM`s DB2, Oracle or Sybase.

In a separate announcement, Embarcadero and Thought Inc have joined forces to market and resell Thought`s CocoBase Enterprise O/R (object-to-relational) mapping software alongside Describe, Embarcadero`s UML (Unified Modelling Language) design and development tool.

The integration of Thought`s CocoBase with Describe strengthens its portfolio of database management products by simplifying the process of persisting relational data. The integration of CocoBase`s O/R Mapping Dynamic layer automatically creates maps and generates Container Managed Persistence (CMP), Bean Managed Persistence (BMP), Session Beans, Java Server Pages (JSP), and standalone Java persistence directly from the UML-XMI object model. This results in rapid development times for building J2EE and J2SE applications.
