Embarcadero Technologies Africa has announced the local availability of its SQL Debugger for the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) database to complement its suite of debuggers for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server.
The new product is the first and only known debugger that uses Sybase's application programming interface (API) to connect directly to ASE. The debugger was developed by Embarcadero in close cooperation with Sybase in order to provide database developers with an easy-to-use ASE debugging tool.
With Embarcadero SQL Debugger for Sybase ASE, database developers can diagnose and correct problematic code and develop better code initially, says Alan Raubenheimer, CEO of Embarcadero Africa.
"Sybase is a particularly popular database in the South African market," comments Raubenheimer. "Its widespread deployment in corporate customers means many developers are struggling with the debugging challenge. This is because most known debuggers for ASE do not connect directly to the Sybase ASE Debug API.
"Without this connection, debugger tools typically need the installation of third-party software, invasive database object installation or a separate debugger repository. Some developers and DBAs choose to debug code manually by embedding a print statement in the code, which can be time-consuming and inefficient. In addition, some debuggers encrypt their execution, rendering the debugging process invisible."
Because Embarcadero SQL Debugger for ASE uses Sybase's Debug API, installation requires only a Windows client. Database developers can quickly debug programmable objects, such as stored procedures and triggers, in an integrated environment. Through the debugger's graphical interface, database developers are given an x-ray into their database application code, allowing them to watch and control the code as it executes and to help identify any errors.
"You can now point and click and debug without any additional set-up," adds Raubenheimer.
"The Embarcadero SQL Debugger for ASE is a result of our close partnership with Embarcadero Technologies," says Julie Tomlinson, marketing manager for Sybase SA. "Sybase customers now have access to a utility that streamlines the development of high-quality, robust applications on Sybase ASE."
The Sybase debugger is available as a plug-in for Embarcadero's DBArtisan or RapidSQL and is compatible with Sybase ASE 12.5 and 12.0.0.3 ESD3. The latest versions of DBArtisan (5.4.2) and RapidSQL (5.7.2) can be obtained by downloading from www.embarcadero.com or by e-mailing info@embarcadero.co.za
