Embarcadero Africa has launched DT/Studio 1.8, the new version of its extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) tool.
Integrating data from sources inside and outside the business has traditionally been costly and complex. DT/Studio addresses this by combining visual modelling with a visual data flow designer and ETL tool that eases administration and integration project implementation.
"DT/Studio has a number of key advantages over other ETL offerings and traditional hand-coded solutions," says Alan Raubenheimer, CEO of Embarcadero Africa. "These include ease of installation, simplicity of use and speed of data transfer. Since DT/Studio is Java-based, it can be deployed anywhere and users can extend its capabilities using Java and JavaScript to accommodate business needs."

Although DT/Studio has a number of new and enhanced features, the most prominent in the new version is the Delta Agent. It captures and forwards only the changes from the source system, reducing overheads and improving performance.
Importantly, this component enables real-time application and database integration by bypassing the Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) and using the database`s own transaction log.
"By operating at the database level, Delta Agent maintains transactional integrity as data is moved across the system. DT/Studio also provides cost savings by eliminating the need for users to buy expensive enterprise application integration tools to push the data into message queues," says Raubenheimer.
Microsoft`s Message Queue allows applications to interact and exchange data using the store-and-forward principle. While it is possible to use this method to interact on a real-time basis, this is a complex process that requires databases and tables to be set up beforehand.
The new version of DT/Studio operates faster, has a data debugger and an XML reader for Web services. The DT/Studio and Delta Agent combination also offer better reporting capabilities. Reports created using the product contain the details and summaries of the business rules used to extract, transform and load the data, as well as runtime statistics. Reports can be formatted as HTML, XML and RTF documents, allowing for easy integration with third-party business intelligence tools.
