Storage giant EMC is expecting to outpace growth in the backup and recovery solutions (BRS) market in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.
So said Luc Esprit, EMC's VP for BRS in EMEA, in an interview with ITWeb last week. According to Esprit, EMC is currently leading the entire BRS market and the company wants to maintain that lead.
He noted that, according to IDC's Purpose Built Backup Appliance report, EMC BRS leads the market with 65.5% market share - four times that of its nearest competitor, IBM.
Turning to Gartner's Enterprise Distributed System Backup/Recovery Market Analysis numbers, he said EMC's Backup Recovery Systems Division grew total market share from 14.6% to 17%. Esprit also revealed that EMC's strategy is to grow its market share by pushing more products into the mid-market segment, where the company has been lagging.
Growth in the BRS market is being spurred by the explosion of information, with more and more organisations seeking to back up their data on a regular basis.
"Backup and recovery have become a fundamental part of business and an essential part of information management," Esprit said. "Information is useless when organisations can't access it when needed."
He also pointed out that the market is growing, as most organisations are realising that traditional backup and recovery solutions - based on tape and physical data centre realities - cannot help them achieve their objectives.
EMC's strategy, he said, is to grow and improve its partner community to make partners more specialised in EMC products.
During its Global Partner Summit, in Las Vegas last month, EMC announced plans to replace the various Velocity channel programmes with a combined partner programme that will brand the company's entire partner base as EMC Business Partners.
Esprit also revealed that the channel changes will have a huge impact on the BRS market, with specialisation being the main focus.
