Information infrastructure solutions leader EMC South Africa has achieved excellent progress in its transformation towards black economic empowerment (BEE).
In its latest rating by the National Empowerment Rating Agency (NERA), EMC South Africa achieved an 80% procurement recognition level despite its legal standing as an American-owned company.
Kgopotso Moropa, HR Manager of EMC South Africa, says: “This progress reflects our capacity-building programmes as well as our preferential procurement and socio-economic contributions to the BEE rating.”
NERA uses seven categories as provided through BEE provisions to measure organisations' BEE ratings: Equity Ownership; Management and Control; Employment Equity; Skills Development; Preferential Procurement; Entrepreneurial Development; and Socio-Economic Development. When these categories are combined, EMC South Africa now has a Level 5 rating.
Moropa explains that EMC South Africa's Preferential Procurement is one of its strengths due to the company's policy of supporting black-empowered organisations as its suppliers. “We take black economic empowerment seriously, and are approaching our transformation step-by-step rather than just paying lip service to this crucial process,” he says. “As a result, we are in a position to choose supplier organisations that are highly skilled in the execution of IT activities. There is no pressure to select a supplier merely to improve our BEE rating.”
Moropa joined EMC South Africa in his current capacity on 1 July 2009. He has held HR consulting and management positions with Score Supermarkets, the South African Post Office, Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery, the Vodacom Sports and Entertainment Centre, Transnet, Transtel and Hewlett-Packard.
During the course of his career, Moropa has gained extensive experience in critical fields such as CCMA and Labour Court Litigations, wage negotiations, succession planning, performance management, recruitment and employee well being.
Commenting on his plans in his new role, Moropa says: “My overarching objective is to enhance employee development and business partnering,” he says. “Our parent company has invested heavily in South Africa as well as the rest of the continent, and I see this appointment as an opportunity to make my mark. I am determined to make EMC South Africa an employer of choice.”
