Employee sabotage! Busby avoids cost and drama in 30 mins

Disgruntled employee's actions have zero impact at House of Busby.

Johannesburg, 24 Jul 2012

Every day, companies are at risk of serious data breaches from various sources, including staff members who are retrenched, fired or somehow disgruntled with the organisation.

In fact, research conducted by IT security firm, Cyber-Ark Software, indicates that:

* 58% of Wall Street workers say they have already taken data from their companies;
* 71% said they will take data if faced with the prospect of retrenchment.

The same is true for South Africa, where companies regularly fall victim to the actions of disgruntled employees.

As the House of Busby recently (re)discovered.

“A disgruntled employee with sensitive company data left the employ of the company and deleted all company data before doing so,” says Group IT Infrastructure Manager at House of Busby, Doug Cargen. “Luckily, restoring the data proved easy, with the Cibecs client being loaded on her laptop, and weekly backups having been done.”

30 minutes to get it back

“What most impressed me about the data recovery procedure was that it only took about half an hour to recover all the files,” says Cargen. “Getting data back quickly and painlessly certainly saved us a lot of time and money, as well as any complications relating to corporate governance and compliance.”

The House of Busby first starting using Cibecs two years ago, so Cibecs asked Cargen to elaborate further on his experience of Cibecs' data backup and recovery solution, highlighting benefits over and above the ability to restore data quickly.

“Before installing Cibecs, I had guys running around with a portable hard drive (single point of failure) trying to back up laptops,” says Cargen. “On restoring data, we found that some data was outdated and useless because the last successful backups were sometimes months old.

“It was also a mission to recover data from a convenience and cost perspective.”

Low total cost of ownership is key

The difficulties experienced with user data backup and recovery prompted House of Busby to find a simple, cost-effective way to manage user data on its endpoint devices - leading to the purchase of Cibecs for 175 staff members in 2010.

“Since the installation and configuration of Cibecs, the backups have run silently and transparently, and my team can concentrate on other tasks. Cibecs has drastically reduced our cost of ownership.”

Ease-of-use, cost and support

“I would certainly rank ease-of-use, low total cost of ownership and superb technical support as the three key benefits that Cibecs has delivered to our organisation,” says Cargen. “Coupled with reduced bandwidth and storage usage, as well as allowing us to prove compliance in terms of data protection regulations, Cibecs is a terrific endpoint user data management solution.”
