The Commission for Employment Equity (CEE) today began the third Roll-out of its programme of site visits with a tour at the Telkom head office in Pretoria.
CEE chairperson Professor Mapule Ramashala led the commission to obtain first-hand information on the challenge and progress regarding the implementation of employment equity in Telkom.
Prof Ramashala stressed that the site visit was not necessarily an inspection tour, but was aimed at consulting with employers on their successes and good employment equity practices.
"Our main purpose of these visits is to promote dialogue and identify areas of research in order to address issues arising from the implementation of the Employment Equity Act," the commissioner said.
"Our observation is that employment equity has been taken seriously by a number of companies. For us, employment equity is about removing inequality and promoting diversity in the work place," Professor Ramashala said.
She added: "We really do not want to see white males feeling left out and assuming that there is no place for them in the South African economy."
Telkom`s Human Resources Group Executive, Oupa Magashula, said he was very pleased with the visit by the commission.
"Notwithstanding many challenges that we still face, we are very proud of our achievements in the implementation of the Employment Equity Act. We started playing this match long before the Act came into being, and we are truly honoured that we are able to share our challenges and take recommendations on a face-to-face interaction with commissioners," Magashula said.
