Complementing its move to a wired Gigabit Ethernet core networking infrastructure, Engen Refinery has implemented a campus-wide wireless network designed for use in temporary offices allocated to contract workers who frequent the site for repair and maintenance work.
Dimension Data, Engen Refinery`s technology partner, implemented the wireless network covering the entire 2km^2 campus, providing temporary site offices with access to data and, at a later stage, voice.
The installation eliminates the need to lay temporary cables to caravan sites which are removed on termination of a turn-around or shutdown - traditionally a costly and time-consuming connectivity exercise.
The wireless network assists the refinery with effectively monitoring permanent and temporary staff time and attendance, a critical need for the sensitive workings of a petroleum refinery.
Tiiu Excell, chief information technologist at Engen Refinery, adds that other long-term benefits will become available from the wireless network such as the flexibility to provide LAN access in remote areas of the plant at very short notice.
"In addition to being cost-effective and meeting our total cost of ownership (TCO) requirements, the flexibility of a wireless network is more than justified, particularly for areas that are difficult to access. Implementing it has been a one-off cost priced much the same as a single temporary wired network."
Bruce Barrett, account manager at Dimension Data in KwaZulu-Natal, says Breeze technology was implemented, due to its ability to carry both voice and data. This wireless networking technology also includes specific security configurations which ensure only authorised personnel are permitted access. As the transmission area is confined to site premises, no outside interference is possible.
"Solar panels connected to battery-powered access points are strategically mounted on two stacks at the refinery. The installation is entirely wireless including the self-contained receiver and transmitter hubs that allow users to log onto Engen Refinery`s LAN," he explains.
