Enterasys Networks, a Cabletron enterprise spin-off, this week introduced a new acronym - SAM - to the SA market as part of its new marketing initiative.

SAM stands for , availability and mobility, the three requirements that Enterasys believes to be key for global enterprises.

Visiting SA this week, David Palmer-Stevens, the company`s VP of marketing for the EMEA region, said Enterasys` ability to meet all its requirements with proven solutions gives it a competitive-edge.

But Enterasys needs some aggressive marketing to get its name better known. A product of Cabletron Systems` split into four companies last year, Enterasys was formed out of Cabletron`s enterprise equipment business unit and launched last April.

Martin May, Sub-Saharan regional director for Enterasys Networks SA, said the challenge in SA is "to get bigger and do that fast".

With this in mind, the company invested R30 million into the local operation and then merged its operation with Duxbury Networks, a long-standing South African channel partner for Cabletron.

"We have grown from 10 to 100 people overnight to become the largest networking manufacturer in SA," said May.

The new company will be known as Duxbury Enterasys.

May said a recent International Data Corporation report places Enterasys as the number one Layer 3 switching vendor according to the number of ports shipped worldwide, but only number two in revenue. "This means we are more cost-effective than our competitors in delivering the latest and greatest technology," said May.

He said a recent local survey commissioned by Enterasys showed that top of the agenda for corporate users was hands-on training and support from the manufacturer. May said Enterasys has training facilities in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and a system of networking warehouses with $5 million worth of spares and a two-hour response time anywhere in the country. A further R1.5 million has been invested in a lab facility.

Palmer-Stevens introduced Enterasys solutions that cover the three SAM areas. He turned the phrase "content is king" into "he who manages content is king", saying that content has to be secure, available and mobile.

"Mobility is not just about the mobility of people, it`s about the mobility of content, moving it where it should be, securely."

He also outlined Enterasys` Secure Harbour architecture, as well as its solutions that he said deliver 100% available networks.
