Following the recent CERT advisory on the vulnerability of Cisco Systems` routers and switches to a specific denial of service (DoS) attack, Enterasys Networks has performed a due diligence testing review of its X-Pedition line of switch router solutions.
The results of this extensive testing confirm that all X-Pedition products are unaffected by this type of attack, including core routing technologies as well as the family of XSR WAN security routers. Enterasys has found that management and protocol traffic continue to function as intended and no additional configurations changes, firmware upgrades or software patches are required.
However, Martin May, regional director of Enterasys Africa, says users should be aware that a large percentage of routing equipment currently in use in the market remains vulnerable.
"There is a frightening amount of legacy equipment from other vendors being used, and this will continue to provide malicious users the flaws needed to launch an attack on networks."
While security audits are often carried out on a company`s software, network set-ups and firewalls, it is very often the supporting equipment which will remain the most easily infiltrated spot in a network.
"Companies really do need to look at what their networking equipment can provide in terms of intrinsic security. Networking technology developed when the Internet first became available is still being used in some of today`s equipment, and this is hardly going to stand up to the tests modern crackers are throwing at our networks," says May.
