Enterasys Networks, together with its alliance partner in SA, Duxbury Networking, have unveiled a strategy for delivering a 10Gb Ethernet networking platform.
Enterasys, a member of the global 10Gb Ethernet Alliance, says by delivering 10Gb Ethernet - claimed to be an industry first - Enterasys will meet the rising performance and capacity needs of LAN, WAN and metropolitan area network (MAN) environments.
"As organisations and their networks transition to a more distributed model, and as more information and bandwidth intensive applications are added to networks, enterprises must build LANs that enable the use of emerging models of content location and delivery," says Martin May, Enterasys Networks SA regional director.
"Enterasys` 10Gb offerings will provide breakthrough performance levels at a critical point - the network edge," he says.
Enterasys` 10Gb programme was developed by John Roese, Enterasys Networks` CTO and the co-author of the emerging 802.1X standard.
"The vision of the optical Internet is emerging via the IEEE`s 802.3ae 10Gb specifications. However, it is only partially realised and will evolve to provide global bandwidth at almost infinite levels," May says.
"To realise the value of the optical Internet`s evolution, enterprises must enhance the interface to this optical network from their LANs. Enterasys will lead the movement towards closing the gap between LANs and the optical Internet by delivering 10Gb capabilities across its switching and routing lines."
Enterasys will initially provide 10Gb Ethernet in its Matrix switching platform. The first product will be a standalone aggregation device with 10Gb transport capabilities for enterprise LAN and MAN networks. It will be available in SA towards the end of 2001.
The switch will provide line-rate performance on 10Gb Ethernet switch ports and a modular 10Gb uplink with numerous transport options for the LAN and MAN .
