Enthusiasts can follow Billabong surfing championship at Jeffreys Bay live on the Internet

Johannesburg, 28 Jun 2000

In the biggest South African webcasting event of its kind, UUNET SA will once again stream to the live action from the beach at Jeffreys Bay for the ten days of the Billabong Pro surfing championship taking place there from 29 June 2000.

People all over the world more accustomed to using a mouse to do the surfing will be able to connect via www.billabongpro.com to live surfing footage, surfer interviews, live commentary and wave-on-wave scoring.

UUNET SA have teamed up again with Australian webcaster, Web 21 - who will produce the video and sound content of the webcast - and Microsoft SA - who provide the software technologies enabling the multi-cast.

Says UUNET`s Rob Lith: "We have configured the Microsoft NetShow server on our premises in Newlands, Cape Town, to receive the video and sound stream from the Web 21 crew on site at Jeffreys Bay and then send it to viewers on the Internet. The routers distribute multiple media streams to people from anywhere in the world connecting to the Billabong web site.

The Web 21 crew has an encoder on site at Jeffrey`s Bay capturing and the video and sound signals in order to send them via a Cisco ISDN router to the UUNET server.

The crew also sends an encoded signal, via UUNET`s server, to a server at Web 21`s headquarters in Australia where a multi-casting facility which mirrors the local UUNET one gets the media streams to Australian Internet dial up users in real time.
