Ericsson mobilises to assist Haiti

Johannesburg, 19 Jan 2010

The United Nations (UN) has requested that Ericsson deploy its Response organisation to aid relief work in -stricken Haiti.

Ericsson has 20 volunteers on standby and will now send four telecom experts to set up a container-based mini GSM system to enable mobile communication in the area. The personnel and equipment will arrive in the area using UN transportation.

Rima Qureshi, head of Ericsson Response, says: “We know from past experience how important it is for aid workers to coordinate the rescue operation using mobile communications. Aid workers can get their work done faster if we can provide them with the tools to get in touch quickly with the outside world, each other, and those most affected by the .”

Founded in 2000, the Ericsson Response organisation worked in the Congo, Sudan, Indonesia and Philippines during 2009.

According to Ericsson, the team was formed because it was recognised that telecommunication expertise is needed during times of disaster. As a result, it formed partnerships with international organisations such as the UN.
