Ernst and Young is leveraging its global knowledge to provide business support to the African telecommunications industry.
Ernst and Young's Global Telecommunications Centre (GTC) is located in Paris and it has centres in Johannesburg, Beijing, Delhi and San Antonio.
Julia Lamberth, Africa telecoms leader for Ernst and Young, says: "Where telecommunications is concerned, the laws that govern the provision of what is increasingly considered an essential service differs widely from one country to the next. The regulatory and tax regimes of each country are divergent. As such, Ernst and Young combine expertise of the local regimes with its global knowledge of the telecoms industry."
Ernst and Young says there is a growing interest from first-world operators in emerging markets. Lamberth says: "Telecommunications requires a degree of specialisation, and it's not possible to have specialists in every country. As a result, through an integrated network, the focus is falling on having specialists on a regional basis - knowledge that is shared to the benefit of our clients."
The temptation to retread international trends is specifically avoided, Lamberth adds. "What is pertinent to the telecommunications market in the UK is unlikely to always apply in a country such as Mozambique. Our commitment to understanding the African telecoms markets, which have different risks, pace of growth, technologies and regulations, means we are cognisant of these factors."
