eSafe goes for gold

Anglovaal Mining Limited (AVMIN), a SA mining and development company, has recently realised the potential threat to its systems and remedied the situation by installing eSafe Gateway.

Like many of its industry counterparts, AVMIN found desktop protection alone did not offer sufficient protection from virus threats posed through the virtual world of the and electronic mail. "No doubt any company that utilises the Internet and e-mail finds itself at , yet it has become impossible to do business without these tools. We had to get comprehensive protection that would secure our assets," says Hamman Fereira, IT analyst for AVMIN.

Anti-virus software offering protection at the Gateway level had to be all-inclusive, according to Fereira. eSafe Gateway provided the AVMIN environment with protection from subtle as well as more traditional threats such as inappropriate data content, viruses, vandals and information theft. With no hardware modifications required and no need to install the software on individual desktops it had the administrative structure AVMIN required. "With the remote management console our administrators are able to configure any eSafe Gateway installation via TCP/IP," adds Fereira. Any suspicious file is passed to eSafe Gateway for inspection yet non-infectable file throughput is not degraded.

The installation eSafe Gateway was handled by eSafe VAR, EC Holdings. Account manager at EC Holdings, George Charal, says before installing eSafe AVMIN experienced virus attacks from a variety of fronts. "Since the installation AVMIN data has been safeguarded from malicious onslaughts," says Charal.

"Our support personnel constantly had to deal with virus call-outs, however, since installing eSafe, our support staff has had time to work on other pressing IT matters," says Fereira. "Should a virus be isolated by eSafe Gateway it is mailed off to eSafe for analysis."

eSafe detects viruses even without the latest virus-table updates and does not require intense maintenance procedures. "The system automatically downloads the latest virus updates but is always at optimum functionality due to the fact that it is not dependent on these updates," concludes Fereira.
