eScan 2003 receives Virus Bulletin 100% award

Microworld Technologies, author of the eScan 2003 anti-virus, anti-spam and content management suite of products, received the Virus Bulletin 100% award for the Windows XP platform in the June 2003 edition of Virus Bulletin.

"With this award, eScan 2003 has confirmed its strength in the and corporate segments as one of the most powerful products available for virus and content ," comments Matt Newnham, eScan product manager at local distributor Camsoft Solutions.

The VB 100% logo is awarded to products that detect all in-the-wild viruses during both on-demand and on-access scanning in Virus Bulletin`s comparative tests. The product must also produce no false positives.

Virus Bulletin tested 25 different anti-virus products for their virus detection rates, scanning speed, lack of false alarms and performance overheads. eScan 2003 outperformed a number of competing products in terms of both speed and detection rates. All eScan products, ranging from desktop protection to mail server and gateway solutions with MailScan, all use the same virus-scanning engine, ensuring consistently high detection rates across all platforms.

"An added advantage of eScan is that the product includes the ability to set remote file access rights on local machines which prevents hackers from installing malicious programs such as spyware and keyloggers on a user`s PC. This solves the problem with Internet banking where keylogging programs that were recently installed without the users` knowledge by criminals on users` PCs captured banking passwords so that funds could be fraudulently transferred out of the users` bank accounts," says Newnham.

The remote file access rights can be set on an individual`s single-user PC or they can be distributed throughout a network in an organisation by an administrator from an admin console, which greatly reduces the amount of spying and hacking that takes place within organisations. Recent surveys have shown that more than 80% of fraud committed in companies takes place internally by employees of the company and a product like eScan goes a long way in addressing this problem. eScan`s features include anti-virus, anti-spam, pop-up ad prevention and content management, making eScan one of the most comprehensive solutions for the problems organisations are currently being faced with.

Bert Cleenwerck, editor of Mobile Magazine, recently commented on SABC`s Business Focus programme that he considered eScan to be a more suitable solution than installing a variety of different products for anti-virus, spam and content management needs because "an integrated solution ensures there are no clashes between different products from different vendors and a product like eScan uses up far less resources, such as memory and processing power, than a basket of unrelated applications".

Virus Bulletin 100% award

The Virus Bulletin 100% awards recognise those products best able to detect viruses known to be in-the-wild. The comparative tests tend to focus on virus detection rates, scanning speed and, more recently, performance overhead of on-access or resident scanning components.
