Real IRM and IT services and solutions company arivia.kom have completed an enterprise architecture (EA) documentation project at Eskom Distribution, involving more than 60 distributed applications.
The project was undertaken in line with the Eskom division`s focus on increasing its business maturity level, an objective to which documented EA is fundamental for success, the companies say. Specifically, it involved documenting all aspects of the software applications used in the business, including the strategies, planning, maintenance, technology migration, and alignment with the client`s organisational goals.
EA documentation makes all aspects of an organisation visible and traceable, and allows for proper legislative compliance, risk management and enterprise application integration, says arivia.kom.
"The project was implemented to provide our client with in-depth information on all its applications and interfaces," says Ula Michalczyk, arivia.kom project manager. "This information is now easily accessible, and easy to update. Before this, neither the data structures for the client`s applications, nor the technologies related to them, had been documented."
"EA links the business mission, strategy, and processes of an organisation to its IT strategy," says Paul van der Merwe, consulting manager at Real IRM. "These are documented using multiple architectural models or views that show how the current and future systems needs of an organisation will be met. Once you understand the true nature of EA, it is easy to see how useful a documented architecture is to the analysis and certification of all processes, systems applications and controls."
