Eskom claims to have achieved a world-first with its implementation of Hyperion Analyzer, specifically in the way in which it enabled widely distributed access to the business intelligence application. In line with this achievement, the way in which the Internet has enhanced the scope and effect of data warehousing on the enterprise will be the focus of the next Data Warehousing Forum, hosted in Johannesburg by Oracle SA on 15 May.
"The Data Warehousing Forum is a chance for the business intelligence community to get together, share experiences and learn from each other in a friendly non-commercial, non-pressured environment," says Paul van der Merwe, director of Knowledge Integration Dynamics (KID), the organiser of the forum.
This month will see Sagie Chetty, information manager at Eskom Generation, overcoming the potentially dreary details of yet another business intelligence solution and delivering a vibrant and entertaining presentation on Eskom`s world-beating deployment of Hyperion Analyzer, locally represented by Global Technology Business Intelligence (GBI).
With government committed to the principles of privatisation and looking to sell off 30% of Eskom, the organisation`s various power stations are being turned into cost-and-profit centres. This means executives need to have a clear and reliable view of the costs, performance and profitability of each power station.
"Our executives, while enthusiastic about the features of the Hyperion Analyzer front-end," adds Chetty, "needed real-time offline and online access to reports and data."
Seeking to empower its executives with remote access to their analytical applications, Eskom, in conjunction with arivia.kom and GBI, the business intelligence specialist in the JSE Securities Exchange-listed Global Technology group, developed a Web-based synchronisation application that allows them to perform vital analysis on their business, wherever they are.
Chetty`s presentation will cover the ambit of the project, its pitfalls and eventual successes in providing users with the full functionality of the world`s leading business intelligence application via the Web - including overcoming the obstacle of limited bandwidth.
