Over a year ago, Compuscan was contracted by the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) to provide a fully functional Consumer and Business Credit Information Bureau, inclusive of infrastructure and application set-up, training and data migration strategies.
After much hard work, Compuscan unveiled a system to be proud of during the official launch of the bureau on 12 August 2011, at the Hilton Hotel, in Addis Ababa. It was a truly grand affair attended by the vice-Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia.
The bureau system is the first building block to provide financial institutions in Ethiopia with modern tools to improve credit-granting processes, and it represents a significant step forward for the entire market in Ethiopia. It will provide factual and predictive credit information to the lending institutions, which will consequently be able to extend more and more credit to both business and consumers. In addition, it will allow borrowers much easier access to financial products, and more importantly, it will provide the National Bank of Ethiopia with the tools and the information to monitor the credit market in Ethiopia.
