EU to reserve bands for LTE, WiMax

The European Commission (EC) has released the harmonised technical rules surrounding the allocation of the radio frequencies in the 800MHz band, says Cellular News.

The rules state that if member states in the EU free up the 800MHz band when switching from analogue to TV broadcasting, they must apply the harmonised technical rules to make the frequencies available for applications.

“The rules pave the way for implementation of innovative broadband technologies and for the fast growing demand for wireless services to be met. I encourage member states to take the necessary steps to implement the decision, so EU businesses and citizens can take full advantage of the benefits of the switchover to digital TV,” says Neelie Kroes, digital agenda commissioner at the EC.

Harmonic to buy Omneon

Harmonic is acquiring fellow Silicon Valley company Omneon, according to Government Video.

The deal is worth around $274 million in cash and stock. The acquisition aims to create a video play-out and processing giant. Omneon's customer base includes BBC, BSkyB, CBS, Comcast, Discovery Communications, NBC Universal, News Corp, Viacom and other media and government agencies worldwide.

“The combined company will have industry-leading technology and expertise in video compression, processing and delivery, video-optimised storage, production and play-out servers, and media management,” says Suresh Vasudevan, CEO of Omneon.

Broadcasters sign agreement

Onstream Media has signed the MarketPlace365 agent and promoter agreement with NewGen Broadcasting, reports PR Newswire.

The agreement promotes the MarketPlace365 platform to develop a virtual tradeshow. NewGen will be providing online radio with relevant content syndication for use by other MarketPlace365 promoters.

NewGen will also assist Onstream in creating a best of breed list of preferred search engine marketing professionals to help MarketPlace365 promoters maximise their lead generation efforts.
