EW Scripps Company relies on EMC CLARiiON networked storage to manage digital content, stream video

By EMC Southern Africa
Johannesburg, 21 Oct 2002

EMC Corporation today announced that The EW Scripps Company has selected EMC networked information storage to store content and stream video for its Web sites. Scripps, a diversified media company that generated $1.4 billion in revenues in 2001, selected EMC networked storage over Hitachi, IBM, Compaq, Sun and Network Appliance storage devices.

Bryan Allen, Managing Director of IT Operations and Engineering for Scripps, said: "Up-to-the-second information is essential to our business. We push out updated information and video to a large portion of our Web sites as frequently as every 15 minutes. EMC CLARiiON storage is a perfect fit because it provides the performance and availability our news-driven environment requires."

Scripps plans to implement EMC MirrorView software to continuously mirror across EMC CLARiiON storage systems located in multiple data centres as a part of its business continuity and disaster recovery plan.

In addition to the CLARiiON systems, Scripps relies on an EMC storage area network (SAN) based on EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage and Channel switches. The EMC SAN powers the storage tier of Scripps` Web hosting operation, which provides both content management applications and ultimately the content delivery of the Scripps media brands, including Home & Garden Television, Do it Yourself Network, the Food Network, PEANUTS, and DILBERT. EMC Global Services assisted Scripps with implementing both the Symmetrix and CLARiiON SANs.

The EMC infrastructure at Scripps serves the storage requirements for a diverse set of servers and operating systems, including Sun Solaris, Dell, Compaq, Windows NT and Windows 2000. Scripps chose EMC software such as the EMC ControlCenter family of products, including EMC SAN Manager, EMC TimeFinder, MirrorView, EMC SnapView, and EMC Navisphere to more effectively manage and protect its growing Symmetrix and CLARiiON storage assets. An EMC Celerra SE File Server provides Scripps with network-attached storage (NAS) for Windows NT-departmental file sharing.
