Silverlake Technology Solutions, a member of the JSE-listed IDION Technology Group, which is one of the top five South African Microsoft Solution providers, has obtained the exclusive rights to distribute the Evergreen/400 range of E-mail integration software to the African market.
Rean Pretorius, managing director of Silverlake explained that in the past AS400 customers have been unable to access their Lotus Notes mailserver from a 5250 terminal, because traditionally you needed a PC to have this access.
"60 to 70% of AS400s worldwide have `green screen` 5250 terminals, and so it makes sense to introduce a product that will afford them the same convenience as a PC," he said.
"The cost of buying PCs for 500 users, just to run Lotus Notes, adds up to around R7-Million, whereas an Evergreen license would cost only R250 000. The cost savings to the organisation are enormous."
Pretorius emphasised that Lotus Domino is fast becoming one of the hot tools to use when building front office systems.
"With the announcement of Lotus Domino for AS/400, the leading groupware software in the industry, the AS400s capabilities for sending, receiving and managing electronic mail are enhanced dramatically," he said.
"Until today, only PC-based Domino e-mail clients were available."
Evergreen/400 is a 5250 e-mail client that allows any existing 5250 non-programmable workstation to now act as a full e-mail capable terminal.
"It becomes possible to send and receive e-mail messages to and from any e-mail server, including Lotus Domino," said Pretorius.
"Evergreen/400 has been developed especially to be used with the OS/400 native version of Lotus Domino, but it can also function with other Domino servers running on platforms such as Windows NT and with servers running on the AS/400 IPCS," he said.
"In essence, Evergreen/400 can be used with any POP3 and SMTP e-mail server running on any platform. This means that Evergreen/400 is all you need to set up a complete working e-mail network connected to the Internet."
He explained that popular business features such as Private Address Book, archiving, sending and receiving messages and attachments, etc., are available with Evergreen/400.
Also the OS/400s System Distribution Directory can be easily integrated.
"All types of e-mail messages are supported including all MIME attachments," he commented.
"With the Leave on Server capability, Evergreen/400 also supports users that normally use a PC-based client to access their e-mail server, but also periodically require the ability to access their mail using a 5250 terminal.
"As a result, PC-based e-mail clients like Lotus cc:Mail or the Lotus Notes are no longer needed to access e-mail residing on any e-mail server anywhere in the world.
