Expats connect online

Four South Africans have set up a social Web site to connect South Africans from all over the world.

The group, one in SA, one based in the US and two in Canada, worked together with a programming team that spans four continents over a period of six months to develop the site, MyCircle.

The site went live in July and has 1 200 registered members.

"We provide a platform for a virtual South African community, which means that while you live in Australia there is no reason that you can`t still be a part of your South African community," says one of the four, US-based Jason Griffiths.

"We have a subscription base, therefore we do not measure or count visitors that do not sign up. We are dealing with free membership but we have an average of over 300 members returning to the site per day."

Griffiths explains that users create their own profiles, upload and share their own pictures, engage in real-time text conversations using a DigiChat peer-to-peer chat system, create or join themed social groups and leave "graffiti" on a graffiti wall.

He says new features - such as an improved blog, photo galleries, file sharing and search capabilities - are being tested or are in the pipeline.
